The Short Answer: Yes, Starting July 2026
For the first time, Medicare will cover weight-loss medications — starting July 1, 2026. A new CMS demonstration called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge gives eligible Part D members access to specific GLP-1 weight-loss drugs for a flat $50 per month, regardless of dose. The program runs through December 31, 2027.
This is a historic change. Medicare has been explicitly barred from covering weight-loss drugs for decades. The Bridge is the first crack in that wall — and for eligible seniors, it turns a $1,000+ monthly expense into a manageable $50 copay.
Which Weight Loss Drugs Are Covered?
The Bridge covers three specific medications, all prescribed for weight management:
- Wegovy (semaglutide) — injection and the new oral tablet
- Zepbound (tirzepatide) — KwikPen injection
- Foundayo — a newer GLP-1 option
These are the only weight-loss drugs covered through the Bridge. Other GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Mounjaro are covered under standard Part D — but only when prescribed for type 2 diabetes, not weight loss. For a detailed breakdown, see our Ozempic vs Wegovy vs Zepbound comparison.
What About Other Weight Loss Drugs?
The Bridge applies only to the three GLP-1 medications listed above. It does not cover:
- Compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide — only brand-name, FDA-approved products qualify. Read more in our compounded semaglutide guide.
- Contrave, Qsymia, or Saxenda — these older weight-loss medications are not part of the Bridge
- Over-the-counter supplements — Medicare does not cover supplements or non-prescription weight-loss products
- Weight-loss surgery — bariatric surgery is covered under Medicare Part A/B through a separate process, not the Bridge
Who Qualifies?
Eligibility requires all three of the following:
- You are enrolled in Medicare Part D — either a standalone Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage (MA-PD)
- You meet a BMI tier — BMI 35+ (no additional condition needed), BMI 30+ with certain conditions (heart failure, uncontrolled hypertension, CKD stage 3a+), or BMI 27+ with other conditions (prediabetes, prior heart attack/stroke, peripheral artery disease)
- Your doctor submits a prior authorization to CMS — not to your plan, but directly to CMS through Humana's LI NET program

How the $50 Copay Works
The $50 monthly copay is set by CMS and stays the same regardless of:
- Which dose you are on (starting dose or maintenance dose)
- Which coverage phase you are in (deductible, initial coverage, or catastrophic)
- Whether you receive Extra Help / Low-Income Subsidy
One important detail: the $50 does not count toward your Part D deductible or the $2,100 annual out-of-pocket cap. The Bridge operates outside the normal Part D benefit structure.

What About After December 2027?
The Bridge is a time-limited demonstration. As of now, it runs from July 1, 2026 through December 31, 2027. After that, Congress would need to pass legislation making GLP-1 weight-loss coverage permanent under Medicare. Several bills have been proposed, but none have passed yet.
If the Bridge is not extended, coverage would revert to the pre-Bridge status: Medicare Part D would again be barred from covering weight-loss drugs. Seniors currently on a Bridge-covered GLP-1 would need to either pay out of pocket or stop the medication.
This makes it important to take advantage of the Bridge window while it exists. If you qualify, the 18-month program gives you time to establish treatment and see results at an affordable price.
